Statement of Purpose
Hello, my name is Joe La Fiandra. I am from Baltimore County, Maryland, and am studying Bioengineering at the University of Maryland. Growing up, I always had an affinity for both STEM and finding a way to stand out from the crowd. As I matured and became more analytical and assertive, I found myself vying for leadership positions in high school while still diligently pursuing a greater understanding of science. I decided to continue this pursuit in college by studying Bioengineering coupled with the Scholars Public Leadership program. These two extremely important aspects of my academic profile serve complimentary purposes: Bioengineering equips me with the technical knowledge for professional success while Public Leadership inculcates me with knowledge of how to organize, analyze, and articulate my ideas. I hope these interdisciplinary attributes culminate in the knowledge required to lead in a highly technical environment. Leaders in STEM are always in demand. This is because leading in a highly technical field requires a very broad spectrum of technical and people skills. The combination of these two elements are what propel scientific innovation forward. Without strong leaders who have the ability to inspire and mobilize, scientific discoveries would simply not be possible. I hope that by the end of this experience, I will not only have a foundational understanding of this skillset but also have real hands-on experience leading in such a challenging environment.
